We’ve created the most disgusting game any child has ever played in public. We didn’t mean to. We were trying to potty train the child.
In an effort to get LB to poop in the potty, we’ve started asking him (while he is sitting on said potty) where he should poop, and then coming up with ridiculous spots for him to poop.
“Should you poop… in the car?”
“Noo!”
“Should you poop… in the bathtub?”
“Nooo! That’s silly.”
“Should you poop… in your pants?”
“Noo! That’s gross!”
Should you poop... in one of these 50 port-a-pottys? Yes. Yes you should. Image courtesy of Phillip Pessar
Genius idea. Except unlike Vegas, what happens on the potty doesn’t stay on the potty.
We were out to eat with family, and LB wonders aloud “Should I poop on the table?”
No son, you should probably hold off on that, now that you mention it.
It turns out that potty training, like most of life, is not a paint-by-numbers game. Lesson (re)learned.
Has something you said behind closed doors ever come out of your child’s mouth out in public? I’d love to hear that I’m not alone.

We went through something similar with Blade. When I found out I was pregnant with Ty, I wanted to make sure Blade was completely potty trained. So…at two years old, we went full blown straight to underwear, because the pull ups just prolonged peeing in the diaper/pull-up. It worked great, he was potty trained quickly, I thought.
Once I started showing (further along in my pregnancy) he started pooping in his underwear?? He would poop and then dump it wherever he was, so he didn’t have to feel it (or to test me…lol). Anyhow, I am about eight months pregnant and explain to him as we leave the house one day. “We only poop in the potty and we don’t poop in our underwear”. I took him to McDonald’s playland and repeated myself several times on the way there (and also mentioned to him that I didn’t have a change of clothes in the car). After about ten minutes in the playland, kids start flying down the slide, “THERE IS POOP IN THE PLAYLAND”…OMG I am thinking, NO WAY! YEP! My two year old comes down naked! He says (in front of a very crowded McD group) “mommy I had to poop, but I didn’t poop in my underwear”!
Nonetheless, I was eight months pregnant couldn’t get up there to clean it, so I got the heck out of dodge…lol!
